Photographing dark scenes

Photo of a dark scene shot with a flash

Most digital cameras are quite sensitive, and if a slow shutter speed is used, can capture fairly dark scenes with a surprisingly natural mood. This is due to the physical properties of CCDs, and can be used to achieve wonderful atmospheric effects that would be otherwise lost by unnecessary use of flash. In fact, as long as it is not completely dark, the CCD will capture some sort of image. Because of the slower shutter speed, make sure you hold the camera firmly or use a tripod to prevent the camera from shaking.
